“Who’s that chik?”
A hip hop tale of a brown girl with big dreams
- Written and performed by Candy Bowers
- Original Beats Production and Sound Design by Busty Beats
After the smashing success of The Naked MC in 2007, after big crowds and glowing reviews at Edinburgh Fringe, after hitting the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, hijacking the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and winning the British Council for the Arts Realise Your Dream Award, Candy Bowers (SISTA SHE) is back at the Old Fitz.
“Who’s that chik?” is an autobiographical ride through the highs and lows, blocks and flows of growing up brown with an afro and big dreams in Australia. Told in the style of hip hop theatre, the piece is a mix of spoken word, rap tracks, street dance, video and Broadway musicals. From being the only brown girl in ballet class to being the only brown girl in drama class at NIDA and then graduating into an industry of whiteness, this actor and hip hop artist is putting it all on the slab.
Oh yeah…and it‚ gonna be very funny, too!
“She (Candy) has charmed audiences across Australia with a blend of rapping, dancing and hilarious jokes.”
The Sydney Morning Herald
“Candy Bowers has a charisma that any star would dream of.”
